During the pandemic, change is the only constant. COVID-19 has placed many new norms in life that people have never dealt with before. Thirty six out of the 50 states now require masks for people in public. People have turned the mask mandate into a positive form of self expression. Although masks can be seen as a pain, they are the best way to protect others and can be a fun way to spice up an outfit.

Anything from bandanas, to star covered masks have been used as facial coverings. To protect oneself as well as others, people have found creative ways to cover up. As masks become more of a commonality, people have turned to them as a way to accessorize. They come in every color one can think of, stripes, polka dots, plaid and people even can get a photo of their smile on their mask. The possibilities are endless and the world is learning to have fun with something that they used to constantly complain about. People are becoming more accepting of masks because they know that they work. According to the Center for Disease Control, studies demonstrate that cloth mask materials can reduce wearers’ exposure to infectious droplets through filtration, including filtration of fine droplets and particles less than 10 microns. As the variety of face coverings and knowledge of COVID-19 increases people have become more accepting of the mask mandate.

The pandemic has been going on for almost a year and there seems to be no end in sight. With there being no light at the end of the tunnel, the world has tried its hardest to make the best out of every situation. Wearing masks gives people a sense of control and peace of mind during uncertain times. Many wear masks out of respect for first responders and essential workers, as well as their friends. According to research done at the Mayo Clinic, wearing masks protects the wearer just as much as it benefits surrounding people.Wearing a mask gives people the opportunity to help others during a time when everything in the world is used to feels useless. Putting others first offers the world a sense of normality.

Masks can be another way for people to express their thoughts. During the 2020 election, masks became a campaign ground where people could silently voice their opinion of different candidates. Face coverings have also been a platform for people to support Black Lives Matter, the LGTBQ+ community and many other groups.

Whether it’s the grocery store or at school, face coverings have quickly become a social norm. Although many people are against masks and preach that they are an infringement of their rights, it is right to wear a mask. The world must stand together to battle the pandemic and everyone must do what they can to help. Wearing a mask in public is an easy way to protect oneself and others. Facial coverings may have started as a safety precaution but they are growing into a fashion staple that people worldwide do not leave the house without.
